Canelo is in his prime

Alvarez has been doggedly pursuing the undisputed super middleweight title, and Plant serves as the last obstacle ahead of his conquest. Momentum is clearly on Alvarez’s side, as he has not lost a fight in eight years, and looked to be at his best in recent victories over Billy Joe Saunders, Avni Yildirim, and Callum Smith.

In fights taking place above the middleweight division, Alvarez has stopped four of six opponents. A combination of his precise counter punching, footwork, and deceptive speed has led many to believe he may run unchallenged in the years to come.

Plant is a tricky boxer

The undefeated Plant is making the third defense of his title he won back in 2019 in a career best win against Jose Uzcategui. Subsequent defenses have come against subpar opponents, with Plant putting forth a boxing clinic in each fight.

Plant can be hard to hit at times, thanks to working behind a disciplined jab. His height and reach advantages will certainly come into play, but he’ll have to step outside his comfort zone to offset Alvarez’s aggression.

Alvarez will KO an overmatched Plant

On paper, Plant isn’t any more of a threat than Saunders was. It didn’t take Alvarez long to adjust to Saunders’ strategy, eventually breaking his face in the eighth round. This fight should have a similar look and feel, though Plant can make it to the championship rounds.

Even if Plant can give Alvarez pause, he won’t win with constant backpedaling, and has been hit and hurt by fighters below Alvarez’s level. Alvarez has outworked superior technicians in the past, and he sets up his power punches better than anyone in boxing.

There’s just not enough that Plant can do that Alvarez won’t be ready for. Alvarez will perhaps give up the first two rounds to feel Plant out, but that will be the extent of Plant’s success. Expect Alvarez to turn this fight into a wipeout, scoring a KO around the 11th round.
