Benn is developing nicely

The son of UK legend Nigel Benn, Conor is coming into his own as an emerging prospect with a lot of talent. Although he doesn’t carry his father’s trademark power, he is a skilled fighter working his way up the welterweight ranks.

Benn has shown tremendous growth over the course of his last five fights, but still needs a strong showing against the well-traveled Vargas to ensure he’s developing properly.

In his last fight against Sebastian Formella, Benn faced an outclassed opponent he couldn’t put away, but showed great poise and patience. As a result, he doled out an impressive beating and is a huge favorite for this fight.

Vargas is running out of options

While Formella showed heart and durability, Vargas is starting to show he’s a little worse for wear. The 31-year-old has become the gatekeeper of the stars, losing in conclusive fashion to the likes of Errol Spence, Danny Garcia, and Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Aside from a split decision loss to an old Luis Collazo in 2019, Vargas hasn’t done much in his fights against big names. There is the off chance he could check a knockout-minded Benn with a shot he doesn’t see, but it’s far more likely that that Vargas gets decked first.

Benn will stop an overmatched Vargas

Benn has told media outlets that he’s gunning for a first round KO of Vargas, and it’s not out of the question that he can get it. He certainly has the attributes to blast Vargas out, and a stoppage will happen, but a first round stoppage might be a big ask.

Vargas is decent enough to survive an early onslaught, but Benn’s speed and punch selection will wear him out sooner than he’d like. Because Benn is a patient fighter that doesn’t over-extend himself offensively, Vargas isn’t going to find a hole for a counter shot.

This fight should be every bit as lopsided as the odds suggest. Expect Benn to drop Vargas early, then string together enough punches to score a TKO in the fourth round.
