Prospects young and old

Both Joyce and Dubois are legit heavyweight prospects, but they’re separated by 12 years. While we’ve seen both fighters flash signs of brilliance, momentum is clearly behind the younger 23-year-old Dubois, as he continues to improve his game. Dubois uses his athleticism and speed to get in position for his shots, whereas the 35-year-old Joyce delivers blunt force trauma with every shot he lands.

Joyce has the flashier resume, but washed up ex-champs and contenders aren’t exactly a great barometer of where he stands. While neither man is on the short list for a world title shot, Dubois’ superior level of opposition suggests he’s closer to a bigger fight than the older Joyce.

Expect a few wild rounds

Joyce still has some questionable habits from his days as an amateur fighter. He moves in straight lines, starts slow, and his inside game needs work. However, he makes up for his deficiencies with his tremendous strength, and has the power to stop Dubois if he catches him. The key for Joyce is to get off to a fast start.

Given the collective power of Joyce and Dubois, we could get in a situation where both men hit the canvas, making the Under 6.5 rounds prop seem like a good bet. For what it’s worth, this fight should make it to the halfway point, but won’t go the distance.

Joyce will succumb to Dubois’ power

Joyce’s conservative start and predictable movement will be his undoing here. While he’s being gravely underestimated by oddsmakers, it’s hard to pick a slow-starting fighter against an athletic one with punching power. Dubois will get his shots off first, land the more meaningful blows, and put Joyce down for the count.

Dubois will bring the heat early, survives a potential rally by a desperate Joyce, and knock him out around the eighth round.

Pick: Dubois (-450)
