Golf Futures Betting
One of the most fun, challenging, and highly profitable types of bets you can make at any sportsbook is on golf futures.
With nearly 50 tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule each year, including the four major championships, there are numerous opportunities to wager on golf futures and collect substantial winnings, if you correctly predict the winner.
How to bet on golf futures
Ahead of each individual tournament, you can find odds on the event winner a week or more away from the start of the competition.
For the four majors — the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship — futures odds are often available up to a year out from tee time.
Major championship dates for 2022
Major | Date | Venue |
---|
The Masters | April 7-10 | Augusta National (Augusta, GA) |
The PGA Championship | May 19-22 | Southern Hills CC (Tulsa, OK) |
U.S. Open | Jun 16-19 | The Country Club (Brookline, MA) |
The Open Championship | Jul 14-17 | St. Andrews Links (Fife, Scotland) |
With most PGA tournaments featuring field sizes of 132, 144, or 156 players, picking a winner is fairly difficult, but incredibly rewarding when you get it right.
Ahead of the 2021 PGA Championship, six-time major winner Phil Mickelson entered as a massive +25000 longshot, before he stunned the golf world with his second PGA Championship victory to become the oldest major champion (50 years, 11 months) in history.
For a few lucky bettors who backed "Lefty," Mickelson's historic win netted them a ton of money. A $100 bet on Mickelson's +25000 odds would have earned an additional $25,000 — talk about a major win.
One bettor even jumped on Mickelson's odds when they were listed higher, further out from the tournament. A $1,000 bet translated into a $300,000 haul for that savvy punter.
Popular PGA Tour golf tournaments
Aside from the four major championships, The Players Championship, Presidents Cup, and the FedExCup Playoffs — which includes the St. Jude Championship, BMW Championship, and Tour Championship in 2022 — are also popular golf tournaments to wager on.

Know the course notes
The best way to increase your chances of winning big money on a golf futures bet is to do your research ahead of time. Each tournament is played at its own unique course, so learn the ins and outs of the layout and determine which statistics — such as driving distance or putting ability — are most important to each venue.
A player's course history and form can also be a good indicator of how that player will perform in an upcoming event. If a golfer has finished in the top 10 at the same tournament in their last two appearances, they are likely due for another strong finish when they return to the course.
Likewise, if a player has missed the cut in their two most recent tournaments, they may be suffering from a spell of bad form. It's usually best to shy away from players who have struggled recently on Tour, but sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery to get their clubs working again.
Other types of golf futures bets
The PGA Tour isn't the only area of golf you can wager on at a sportsbook. You can also find golf futures odds on the European Tour, the LPGA, and the Champions Tour, for golfers over the age of 50.
