PGA Tour: A pair of live longshots at the RSM Classic

The last official PGA Tour event in the calendar year starts Thursday at the Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island, Georgia. The RSM Classic will take place for the first two days on two different courses, the Seaside and the Plantation, with the final two rounds on the Seaside. The tournament, which began in 2010, originally was on the Seaside only but added the other course four years ago.

The RSM is hosted by Hall of Famer Davis Love III, who did a noteworthy redesign of the Plantation course. That redesign includes a "Principal's Nose" bunker on the 10th hole, a tribute to the renowned bunkers on the 16th at St. Andrews' Old Course.
The Seaside course originally was a Harry S. Colt/Charles Alison design but eventually was given a makeover by Tom Fazio.
The Seaside is listed as a par 70 and is played at 7,055 yards, while its sister course is 7,060 yards and a par of 72. Another aspect of interest is that, just like last week in Mexico, no player has ever won this event twice. Several past champions are in the field to give it a try.
After he was selected as a captain's pick by Ernie Els for the Presidents Cup, Canadian Adam Hadwin could be worth a shot at +3300 odds. A graduate of the University of Louisville, Hadwin opened up this season with a second in the Safeway Open in California and followed that up with a tie for fourth in the Shriners in Las Vegas. After a couple of so-so showings on the Asian swing, Hadwin looks poised to prove to Els that his selection was just. He will make his first appearance at the RSM in four years, which isn't the best thing, but so far this season, Hadwin ranks fourth on Tour in strokes gained tee to green and third on Tour in strokes gained approaching the green. Those are strong assets no matter where you play.

Numerous PGA Tour players call this area home, including Brian Harman. A two-time winner on the PGA Tour and a lefty in golf only, just like Phil Mickelson, Harman tied for fourth in the RSM two years ago. He offers +6000 to win and is one to think of in any each-way scenario. Harman showed impressive form recently at Greenbrier, where he tied for third, and has only one missed cut in this young season.
This tournament will be the last chance to qualify for the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, and the winner will get into the Masters, as well.
