PGA Sanderson Farms Championship: Betting odds, props & picks

Plenty of the PGA Tour’s leading stars are taking a well-deserved weekend off as their attention turns towards The Masters next month, but the betting opportunities don’t stop at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

The event has been played at the Country Club of Jackson since 2013, and all six champs here were winning for the first time on tour, so this is a great opportunity for a live outsider to ditch his maiden tag.

The stats suggest we don’t need to worry too much about whether or not you can bomb it off the tee, nor do we need to be concerned with whether or not you’re accurate with the driver – these roughs shouldn’t cause players too much trouble. Instead this will be a battle on the dance floor. Who has the hottest flat-stick? Who can hold their nerve on the greens?

Greens in regulation is a key stat to look for this week, with five of the six winners here ranking in the Top 10 for GIR when they won. Putting average is also bang up there, with the first five winners here all ranking in the Top 5 and Sebastian Munoz last year ranking 11th.

So, with that in mind, here are the hottest props this week.

Top Australian player: Cameron Davis (+175)

The Top Aussie market has often haunted me with my Jason Day picks in the past, but I feel this could be the week we nail it with Cameron Davis.

The young Australian caught the eye last month with a Top 15 finish in the Wyndham Championship and a Top 30 finish in the Northern Trust, despite being second after 36 holes and then enduring a difficult weekend. The form in the Wyndham is most noticeable as it is played on the same Bermuda Greens as here in Mississippi, and Davis putted exceptionally well there, carding three rounds of 65.

Davis was 14th on Tour last season in birdies or better percentage, and he can thrive on these greens again.

Top 10 finish: Sam Burns (+250)

This is almost a home game for Sam Burns, who was born a stone’s throw away in Louisiana, and his love for the course is clear. He finished third here in 2018 despite being in hopeless form (he missed the cut in his tournament prior and then missed two cuts following it) and the last year finished 45th despite playing with an ankle boot on after breaking his ankle in two places playing basketball.

This time he comes into the tournament in much better form courtesy of a Top 10 finish in the Safeway Open after leading through three rounds, and a Top 30 finish in the Corales Puntacana Championship. The latter could have been so much better after he played exceptionally for three rounds, but a 78 on Saturday’s card let him down.

Top 20 finish: Denny McCarthy (+300)

When you’re looking for someone who loves to putt, look no further than Denny McCarthy. The American ranked first for shots gained putting on Tour in the 2019-20 season, and has some decent course form too, finishing seventh in 2018 and 18th in 2019.

He ranked 16th on Tour last season in birdies or better percentage, and only seven players hit more birdies than him last season.

He missed the cut at the Safeway Open on his penultimate start and was outside the Top 40 last week in the Corales Puntacana Championship, but back to the Wyndham Championship in August which was played on these Bermuda greens he finished inside the Top 10 and carded a 63 on the Sunday. If McCarthy’s putter gets hot, he will be hard to stop and backing him to finish in the Top 20 looks like the play.

Top Continental European player: Kristoffer Ventura (+700)

This is a bit of a long shot, but one that is worth a flyer with Norwegian Kristoffer Ventura. He finished in the Top 10 of the Safeway Open on his penultimate start and showed he can get on a birdie-roll in the Wyndham Championship when he carded a 63 on the Saturday on these Bermuda greens.

He was fourth on Tour last season in shots gained putting and is a youngster packed full of potential that fits the bill here.
