Major League Baseball got a whole lot more fun on April 5, 1993 when the Colorado Rockies made their long awaited debut. The Rox only won 67 games during their inaugural campaign, but that hardly mattered to fans, who churned through the turnstiles at Mile High Stadium in record numbers to cheer on their hometown club.

Part of the appeal was the team’s novelty, of course, but many fans packed the stands because of the staggering number of homers hit into Denver’s notoriously thin air. The stadium’s location 5,280 feet above sea level meant that balls traveled 9% further than at other ballparks, thereby turning regular games into home run derbies.

The Rockies later relocated to Coors Field in 1995, but the new venue produced the same old results, as balls continued to fly into the stratosphere. 303 dingers were hit at "Coors Canaveral" in 1999, which remains an MLB record.

Colorado’s distinctive home field advantage hasn’t produced a World Series title just yet, but it has led to plenty of success over the years. The Rockies have won 90 games or more three times since their inception, and have advanced to the postseason on five occasions.

The Blake Street Bombers’ deepest run occurred in 2007, when they swept the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS, before being hastily eliminated in four games on baseball’s biggest stage by the Boston Red Sox. They’ve since been to the playoffs three times and continue to pound the stuffing out of the ball when playing at home.
