Wednesday MLB preview: Cardinals-Dodgers, Phillies-Diamondbacks

Another low-scoring game appears to be in the works at Dodger Stadium.

Jack Flaherty owns a 1.15 ERA over his last five starts for St. Louis and has posted a 4.33 strikeout/walk ratio in the process. In three starts against Los Angeles in his career, Flaherty has allowed three earned runs in 18 innings and struck out 26 batters with just four walks. Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner and right fielder Cody Bellinger are a combined 1-for-14 all-time against Flaherty, who grew up 10 miles away from Dodger Stadium.

Dustin May—aka "Gingergaard"—struggled late in his MLB debut against the Padres on Friday, when he surrendered three earned runs on nine hits and struck out only three in 5 2/3 innings. However, the pitching prospect will face a Cardinals lineup that has averaged just 2.5 runs per game over their last 10 contests.

The Diamondbacks will send the newly acquired Zac Gallen to the mound on Wednesday night, as they attempt to take the rubber match of their three-game series with the Phillies, who will counter with a trade-deadline piece of their own, Jason Vargas.

Gallen has made just seven big-league starts, but his body of work was impressive enough for the Diamondbacks to offer shortstop prospect Jazz Chisholm to the Marlins at the deadline. The Phillies are just 22nd in runs per game on the road (4.51), so Gallen appears to be in line for another fine start.

Vargas has been ineffective on the road this season, where he's produced a 5.03 ERA in 10 starts. Arizona presents a nightmare matchup for him, as their lineup is third in the majors in batting average against lefties (.282) and OPS (.842). Look for D-backs first baseman Christian Walker (1.113 OPS last seven games) to continue his hot streak.
