Covington remains elite despite Usman loss
Though Covington came up short once more to Usman in his last fight, he remains the best welterweight in the division outside of its champion. An excellent striker with wrestling skills to match, Covington is a well-rounded fighter who would be a threat in any previous era in the UFC.
His takedown-heavy offense and mean streak makes him a handful for all but the very best. While the bad blood has been brewing between he and Masvidal for some time, Covington will need to keep his emotions in check against an opponent who is hellbent on taking him out.

Masvidal’s inside knowledge is paramount to victory
The hard brawling Masvidal is coming off of back-to-back losses to Usman where, in the rematch, he was stopped for the second time in his career. Through 50 professional fights, Masvidal has displayed sublime striking technique and is tough as a two dollar steak.
The key intangible here is his long history with Covington. There might be a gap in his technique that he could exploit thanks to his personal experience, but the same can be said for the younger, more versatile Covington as well.
Covington will easily beat Masvidal
A lot has been made about the narrative of this bout, and that’s because the reality of the situation isn’t as exciting. Covington is one of the best welterweights in the promotion, and Masvidal simply is not. There is little to like when it comes to Masvidal’s chances here. Perhaps there is a version of Masvidal that could beat Covington, but we don’t deal with fantasy fights and message board shouting matches here. With more tools in his belt, less tread on his tires, and a proven record against top opposition, this is Covington’s fight to lose.
Covington should dole out a comprehensive beating on Masvidal when they face off. Whether Covington can stop his stubborn opponent is another story, but while a decision is likely, there could be a late stoppage if Masvidal can’t slow things down early or if he gets the worst of their inevitable exchanges.
UFC 272 pick: Covington
