Can Carson Wentz revive his career and return to his former MVP form with a Frank Reich reunion?

In 2021, we have gained a glimpse of that answer, as the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback began a new chapter with the Indianapolis Colts and head coach Reich, who served as offensive coordinator for Wentz in Philly. 

The former North Dakota State star was once a promising NFL prospect who landed with the Eagles in the 2016 draft with the No. 2 overall pick — the highest selection ever by an FCS player.

In his first season in Philadelphia, Wentz set a number of NFL and franchise rookie records. The following season, he was a frontrunner for league MVP, until injuries upended his season, as they have many times throughout his career.

In 2020, Wentz struggled in Philly and ultimately lost his starting job to rookie Jalen Hurts.

Reich threw his former quarterback a lifeline in Indy, where Wentz replaced now-retired quarterback Philip Rivers.

Let's look back at Wentz's career, and break down his regular-season and postseason records against every NFL team.

Wentz vs. the Arizona Cardinals

In a Week 5 matchup in 2017, Wentz threw a career-high four touchdown passes in a 34–7 win against Arizona.

Through his first five games that season, he racked up 1,362 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, with just three interceptions.

His hot start made him a popular pick to win NFL MVP, but an injury in Week 13 cost him the award.

Wentz vs. the Chicago Bears

Wentz made history quickly in his NFL career, as he became the first rookie quarterback since 1970 to win his first two games of the season and not throw an interception.

In Week 1 of the 2016 season, he beat Cleveland, 29-10, while passing for 278 yards and two scores. The following week against Chicago, he tallied 190 yards and one touchdown in a 29-14 victory.

Wentz vs. the Cleveland Browns

The Eagles originally planned for Wentz to sit behind Sam Bradford during Wentz's rookie season, but Philadelphia opted to trade Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings ahead of the 2016 season.

Wentz suffered a rib injury in the preseason but was cleared to play by the season opener. He made his NFL debut in Week 1 against Cleveland and led Philly to a win in Doug Pederson's first game as head coach.

Wentz vs. the Green Bay Packers

During a tumultuous season for Wentz in 2020, Pederson benched his franchise quarterback in the third quarter of a Week 13 game against Green Bay, after Philly went down 20-3. 

Rookie Hurts stepped in at quarterback and remained the starter for the rest of the season.

Wentz finished the year with 16 passing touchdowns and 15 interceptions, which led the league. His 19 total turnovers and 50 sacks taken also topped the NFL, and his 57.4% completion percentage was a career low.

Wentz vs. the Indianapolis Colts

After Wentz was medically cleared from an ACL injury, he made his 2018 season debut in Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts.

In the contest, Wentz passed for 255 yards, one touchdown, and threw an interception in a 20-16 victory.

He remained the starter through Week 11, and posted a 5-6 record, as he threw for 3,074 yards, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.  

A back injury near the end of the season forced the Eagles to shut down Wentz for the final three games and the postseason. Backup Nick Foles assumed starting duties.

On March 17, 2021, the Eagles traded Wentz to Indianapolis in exchange for a 2021 third-round draft pick and a 2022 conditional second-round pick.

Wentz vs. the Los Angeles Rams

After putting together an MVP-caliber season in 2017, Wentz went down with a knee injury in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Before exiting the game, Wentz threw for 291 passing yards, four scores, and tossed an interception in a 43–35 win.

The victory secured the NFC East title for the Eagles, but the next day, the franchise learned that Wentz had suffered a torn ACL.

Through 13 games in the 2017 season, Wentz finished with 3,296 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, with a 101.9 quarterback rating.

He was selected for his first Pro Bowl, and was ranked third by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018.

While he did not play in the postseason, Wentz was a primary factor in positioning Philly for its subsequent playoff run.

Foles took over in the postseason and guided Philly to the franchise's first Super Bowl title, with a win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

Wentz lost a 27-24 heartbreaker to the Rams on Sept. 19. 2021. Adding injury to insult, he was forced to exit the game during the fourth quarter after defensive lineman Aaron Donald mangled his right ankle.

Wentz vs. the NFC East

In the NFC East, Wentz dominated the New York Giants and Washington Football Team, with a combined five losses out of 17 regular-season games played.

He is 4-4 against the Cowboys, who just barely beat out the Eagles for the NFC East title in 2018, after the Eagles lost both division games against their rival that season.

In his five seasons in Philly, Wentz earned two division titles. His team also ranked at the bottom of the NFC East twice — in Wentz's rookie season and the 2020 season, when the Eagles went 4-11-1.

Wentz vs. the Seattle Seahawks

Wentz has played in just one of the Eagles' six playoff games since 2017. 

His lone game action came against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card Round at the end of the 2019 season. 

With a 9-7 record, the Eagles earned the No. 4 seed in the postseason and hosted the 11-5 Seahawks.

In the first quarter, former Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney laid a helmet-to-helmet hit on Wentz, which sidelined the quarterback with a concussion.

Wentz played only nine snaps in his postseason debut, and was replaced by backup Josh McCown in the eventual 17-9 defeat.

Wentz was inactive during the Eagles' two postseason games in 2018, as he dealt with a back injury, and was placed on injured reserve before Philly's surprise Super Bowl run in 2017.
