Jaguars Super Bowl odds take a massive hit following Foles injury

The Nick Foles era has officially been put on pause in Jacksonville. The Jaguars quarterback is out indefinitely after he broke his clavicle in his regular-season debut for the franchise. The injury occurred with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter, when Foles was clobbered by Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones. The 30-year-old was immediately taken out of the game for X-rays and was ruled out soon after by Jacksonville's medical staff.

It must have felt like déjà vu for Foles, who broke the same clavicle in Week 9 of 2014. That particular injury ended his season prematurely and brought the Philadelphia Eagles' playoff aspirations to a crashing halt. He will undergo surgery Monday to repair the fracture.

Foles' injury has had an immediate—and dramatic—impact on the Jaguars' championship aspirations, as the team's Super Bowl LIV odds have lengthened from +3000 to +7175. Jacksonville now has just the 24th best odds to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy this February.

With Foles sidelined the Jaguars will now look to rookie Gardner Minshew to guide them into the postseason. The sixth-round draft pick from Washington State played brilliantly during Week 1, as he completed 22 of his 25 pass attempts and connected with Dede Westbrook and Chris Conley for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars ultimately fell to the Chiefs 40-26, but Minshew proved he can hang with the big boys.

It's a good thing that Minshew looked so comfortable Sunday, because he is the team's only active quarterback at the moment. The Jaguars' only other option is little-known Marshall alum Chase Litton, who was signed to the team's practice roster last week.

Patriots' Super Bowl odds get a big boost after acquiring Brown

The Jaguars aren't the only team to experience a significant change in their Super Bowl fortunes over the weekend. The New England Patriots saw their championship odds improve from +625 to +320, after they acquired wide receiver Antonio Brown following his release from the Oakland Raiders.

The seven-time Pro Bowler joins Julian Edelman and Josh Gordon in what is shaping up to be the most fearsome receiving corps in the league. The Patriots didn't need Brown in Week 1 during their 33-3 massacre of the Steelers, but they're eager to let him loose next Sunday against the floundering Dolphins.

The best-case scenario is Brown puts his ego aside and enjoys a renaissance season, a la Randy Moss. The worst-case scenario is he becomes a locker-room cancer and is banned from Foxborough before Week 10. Either way it is a gamble the Patriots are willing to take.
