Quicklinks
Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs entered Sunday’s game against the Colts as one of three undefeated teams remaining in the league. With Patrick Mahomes hobbling around the field, the NFL’s No. 2 offense couldn’t get much going against the Colts and exited Arrowhead Stadium with a 19-13 beating.
Mahomes went 22-of-39 for 321 yards and one touchdown in a Sunday night showdown teeming with penalties. The Chiefs committed 11 on the evening for a loss of 125 yards, while the Colts were responsible for seven.Indy controlled the clock, as well, with the help of Marlon Mack’s 132 rushing yards on 29 carries. The Colts seemed to breeze by the Chiefs run defense at will and ended the night with 180 yards on the ground. Kansas City’s rushing attack racked up a measly 36 yards.
The Chiefs hope to bounce back at home against the 3-2 Texans on Sunday. Houston is coming off a 53-32 thrashing of the 1-4 Falcons, in which quarterback Deshaun Watson achieved a perfect passer rating, with an 85 percent completion rate, 426 yards and five touchdowns.

— The Checkdown (@thecheckdown) October 6, 2019
The Texans give up the eighth-most passing yards per game, which doesn’t bode well for their matchup against the No. 1 passing offense in the league (356.0 YPG). However, the Chiefs are one of the worst teams at defending the run and could give Houston a chance to eat up the clock, with Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson and Watson trading off carries.
This one should be close, with the early lines giving KC a five-point advantage. It’s important to note, the road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings between these two teams.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Minnesota Vikings
Two 3-2 teams battle it out for win No. 4, when the Eagles head to Minnesota Sunday afternoon.Philadelphia is 2-0 in its last two games after faltering in the beginning of the season. Following losses to the Falcons and Lions, the Eagles handed Green Bay its only defeat of the season on Thursday Night Football and crushed the New York Jets, 31-6, last Sunday.
The Vikings, on the other hand, haven’t been able to assemble a streak of any kind in the early season, as they’ve followed up every win with a defeat.
If the pattern continues, Minnesota is set to lose to the Eagles at home after dishing out Daniel Jones’ first career loss, a 28-10 thumping in New York.

The Vikings rely heavily on Dalvin Cook and the run (166.4 YPG), while the Eagles are a bit more balanced. On defense, however, Minnesota and Philly rank in the top 10 in fewest yards allowed—292.4 and 334.2, respectively—but the Vikings pass defense is much more dangerous (fifth in the NFL).
The problem for Minnesota is the Eagles rank first in rushing defense (63.0 YDS/G), which could severely limit the Vikings’ offense on Sunday.
The Eagles are 5-1 against the spread in their last six road games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 against Minnesota. The Vikings are 1-7 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 1-6 ATS in the last seven following a straight-up win.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams
Riding a two-game losing streak, the Los Angeles Rams are in dire need of a win at home against the division-leading San Francisco 49ers.Last Thursday, the Rams fell to Seattle on the road after an inexplicable home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the last week of September. LA’s run game stalled once again, as Toddy Gurley produced 51 yards from 15 carries, and Malcom Brown notched three yards on his only touch of the game against the Seahawks.
Jared Goff continued his struggles, as well, going 29-of-49 for 395 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His matchup against the 49ers should cause him more trouble, considering San Francisco is allowing an average of 208.3 passing yards (sixth-best in the league).
The 49ers run defense is even more lethal. The unit is No. 3 in the NFL, with 75.0 opponent rushing yards per game, and has yet to give up a touchdown. Both the Bucs and Seahawks rank in the top five in rushing defense, too, and Gurley put up just 16 and 51 yards, respectively, against those defenses. Expect another lack of output from the fifth-year back.

— Grant Cohn (@grantcohn) September 19, 2019
As for San Francisco’s offense, Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. have combined to create one of the fiercest running back committees in the league. Through three games, Breida has run for a team-high 226 yards, Mostert has tallied 202 yards on 34 attempts, and Wilson has carried the ball four times into the end zone.
The Rams run defense has given up 106.8 yards per contest (15th in the NFL) and five total rushing touchdowns through four games. Opposing offenses average 243.2 yards per game against LA’s pass defense, which has picked off quarterbacks just four times on the season.
San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo has thrown four interceptions to five touchdown passes through three games, but his completion percentage (69.0) is one of the best in his five-year career.
New York Giants vs. New England Patriots
Thursday, October 10, 8:20 p.m. ET | Gillette StadiumLongtime Patriot foes, the New York Giants, head to Gillette Stadium for a primetime date with the 5-0 New England Patriots on Thursday.
Daniel Jones and company will go up against the NFL’s No. 1 defense, which has yet to allow a quarterback to throw a passing touchdown through the first five games. Since Jones took over as the starter for the Giants, his team is 2-1, with wins over Tampa Bay and Washington, but he and the Giants may be severely outmatched by the Patriots.
Last week, New England got a shot at the now 0-5 Redskins and ran up the score 33-7, while Tom Brady eclipsed Brett Favre for third all-time in passing yards (71,932). He also tossed three touchdown passes to bring his career total to 527, just 12 shy of Peyton Manning’s record (539).

Sony Michel led the run game with 91 yards and one touchdown, plus he pulled in 32 yards on three catches. In the Giants’ loss to the Vikings, New York gave up 211 rushing yards—132 to Dalvin Cook, alone—and let Kirk Cousins complete 22 of his 27 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns.
The Giants boast the third-worst defense in the league and have given up an average of 25 points per game. The Patriots allow an average of just 6.8 points and 238.4 total yards.
There’s little doubt the Patriots will collect win No. 6 at home against New York, but the 17-point spread is a bit high. The Giants are 5-0 ATS in the last five games against the Patriots and 4-1 ATS in their last five in New England. The underdog is also 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Los Angeles Chargers
Sunday, October 13, 8:20 p.m. ET | Dignity Health Sports ParkThe Steelers were down another quarterback in Sunday’s 26-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens, as Mason Rudolph left the third quarter with a concussion. Undrafted rookie Devlin Hodges stepped in and connected on seven of nine passes for 68 yards, while the game turned into a kicking contest between the Ravens’ Justin Tucker and Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell.

— Rob Lowder (@Rob_Lowder) October 6, 2019
Boswell went three-for-three on field goals, but Tucker hit one more to put the Ravens over the Steelers in extra time.
Now 1-4, Pittsburgh will visit L.A. to clash with a 2-3 Chargers team that dropped a home game to the then-winless Broncos on Sunday. Philip Rivers failed to turn in a touchdown and threw two picks on 32-of-48 passing.
Despite Melvin Gordon returning to the team, the Chargers also struggled in the ground game, as Gordon gathered just 31 rushing yards on 12 attempts. L.A. should find more success against the Steelers run defense, which gives up 125.8 yards per contest. Rivers may not like his matchup with Pittsburgh’s secondary, though, as the Steelers have stockpiled six interceptions on the year, tied for third-most in the NFL.
The Chargers are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games and 1-3-1 ATS in the last five versus the AFC. The Steelers are 1-3-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record.

Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers
Monday, October 14, 8:15 p.m. ET | Lambeau FieldThe 2-1-1 Lions enjoyed a week of rest, while the Green Bay Packers proved superior to Dallas once again. Green Bay scored a 34-24 road victory to mark the Packers’ third straight win over the Cowboys and their eighth in the last nine meetings.
Against a top-10 defense, Aaron Rodgers completed 22-of-34 passes for 238 yards and zero interceptions despite his top target, Davante Adams, sitting out with a toe injury.
Running back Aaron Jones emerged in the spotlight, as he led the team in rushing and receiving, with 107 and 75 yards, respectively. He also ran the ball into the end zone four times, which tied Green Bay’s franchise record for rushing touchdowns in one game.

The Packers face NFC North rival Detroit on Monday and look to further solidify their spot atop the division standings. The Lions lost their first game in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs, 34-30, after Patrick Mahomes led a comeback drive with under a minute to go in regulation.
Though Detroit came up short, the Lions did break Mahomes’ streak of two touchdown passes over 14 straight games and kept the reigning MVP scoreless on the day.
Now the Lions aim to frustrate Rodgers and Green Bay’s middling passing attack (244.2 YPG). The Packers’ run game hasn’t been overwhelming, either, aside from Jones’ performance against the Cowboys and a 116-yard day against the Vikings.
The Lions rank seventh in passing yards and 13th in rushing, with Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. combining for 520 receiving yards, and running back Kerryon Johnson rushing for 251 in the early part of the season.
The Lions are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings with the Packers and 6-1 ATS in the last seven games following a bye week. Green Bay is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 versus the NFC North and 2-5 ATS in its last seven Monday games.

Get to Know Duke Williams
Get used to hearing Duke Williams’ name. The Bills wide receiver caught four passes and scored the game-winning touchdown in his first taste of NFL action on Sunday. Here are three things you need to know about the practice squad signee:
- Williams didn’t take a typical path to the NFL. The Los Angeleno attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he scored 26 touchdowns in two seasons before transferring to Auburn.
- Williams is no stranger to fast starts. The 26-year-old caught nine passes for 154 yards in his first game with the Tigers.
- Williams began his professional career in Canada with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL. He tallied 508 yards in his rookie season in 2017 and led the league with 1,579 receiving yards in 2018.

— Lon from Jets Zone Radio (@lonjets) October 7, 2019
Kudos to Jets head coach Adam Gase on delivering one of the biggest understatements of the century. New York is now 0-4 and has been outscored by an eye-popping 62 points.

Jay Gruden will have to see a locksmith if he wants to get back into Washington's facilities. The Redskins fired the embattled coach after starting the season 0-5.
Three and Out
The Jets got a big lift last Wednesday when Sam Darnold returned to practice for the first time since being diagnosed with mono. The 22-year-old QB still needs to be cleared by the team’s medical staff, but could be available to suit up as early as Week 6 against the Cowboys. Here’s a quick update on three more quarterbacks and when they may return to action:
- Drew Brees (Saints): The 12-time Pro Bowler created quite a stir on Instagram on Sunday when he posted a video of himself throwing a football. Brees is progressing well in his rehab and expects to return on October 27 to face the Cardinals.
- Nick Foles (Jaguars): Foles has become something of a forgotten man in the wake of Minshew Mania, but Jacksonville is still eager to get the Super Bowl champ back under center. Expect to see him on the field again on November 17 against the Colts.
- Cam Newton (Panthers): Newton missed his third straight game on Sunday and is still sporting a walking boot as he recovers from a foot injury he suffered during the third week of the preseason. The former MVP posted a video on YouTube over the weekend admitting he’s unsure when he’ll be able to return. "It could very well be a week or it could be two weeks,” he divulged. “It could be three weeks. It could be four weeks. It could be six weeks. But the things that I have to understand and know: If it takes that time, I trust in this team that they will, we will still be in a great situation by the time I get back."
The NFL is back and so are BetAmerica's National Football League odds, props and futures!

NFL Information and History
When it comes to sports betting in the United States, nothing is bigger than NFL football and NCAAF football. Below you will find information on NFL and NCAAF betting at BetAmerica. The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920 and has survived many years of instability and competition from rival organizations to become the strongest American professional football league. The NFL completed a merger with the American Football League (AFL) in 1970 to create a 26-team circuit. Since then, the league has expanded four times and added six new franchises to create today’s modern NFL with 32 teams; all based in the United States.
The NFL is governed by a commissioner, and the schedule consists of a 17-game regular season with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week. The regular season runs from September through December.
The NFL owners unanimously approved a realignment plan for the league starting in 2002. Seven clubs changed divisions, and the league consists of 32 teams in two conferences, the American (AFC) and National (NFC) with four divisions in each conference. A new scheduling format ensures that every team meets every other team in the league at least once every four years. All division teams meet twice during the regular season.
Following the regular season, six teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs with each division winner plus two wild cards. The winner of each conference plays in the championship game, the Super Bowl for the league’s top prize, the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The NFL has the highest average attendance at their games of any professional sports league in the world. Attendance averaged more than 67,000 fans per game in 2017. The NFL is the undisputed leader as the most popular spectator sport in the United States.
The league headquarters are in New York City, and the official website is http://www.NFL.com.

The NFL Spread, NFL Moneyline and NFL TOTAL
Like all major sports, American football betting is built around the straight bets - the spread, moneyline and total. The spread is a point differential between the two teams that indicates a favorite being handicapped against an underdog. This is to account for the strengths of either team. If you were to wager on Team A at -6.5 against Team B, you would need Team A to win by at least seven points to clear the wager. Inversely, Team B could win outright or lose by up to six points in order for your bet to cover. The moneyline is a bet on the outright winner, while the total is an over/under wager on the total number of points scored the game itself.
The natural home line for NFL and NCAAF betting is -3.0, while the total will begin at 44.5. From there, the odds are adjusted to account for the disparity between the two sides. Action generated from the betting public can also influence the odds in a game.
American football uses American odds, but you can also adjust the system at BetAmerica to view decimal or fractional odds if you prefer. Wagers with a minus-sign will indicate how much you have to bet in order to win $100. An example is a -135 favorite ($135 bet to win $100). Underdogs will have a plus-sign in front of their odds, indicating how much you would win if you bet $100. An example is +275 ($275 return on $100 wager).
Parlays and straight bets both apply to American football betting and gain extra traction because most of the games all happen on the same day. You can also enjoy teasers, if-bets and round robins. BetAmerica offers the full menu when it comes to football betting every weekend!
