Odds say Dolphins will pick Justin Herbert in 2020 NFL Draft

There is a slew of prop bets available on the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft, and one of the most intriguing ones centers around Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert.

The standout signal caller is currently favored to be selected by the Miami Dolphins, who hold the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft. However, it is not a certainty that the Fins will roll with Herbert as their quarterback of the future, setting things up for an underdog to nab him instead.

Dolphins may be forced to choose between Herbert and Tagovailoa

Most credible mock drafts have LSU quarterback Joe Burrow going No. 1 overall to the Bengals before three straight non-QBs are drafted. If indeed the Redskins draft edge rusher Chase Young, the Lions grab corner back Jeff Okudah and the Giants select offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, that would mean the Dolphins would be presented with a choice at No. 5 between Herbert and Tua Tagovailoa.

The concern with Tagovailoa, who was considered the best upcoming quarterback at this time last year, is his health. He’s been rehabbing from a devastating hip injury that prematurely ended his junior year. However, he’s recently been given a clean bill of health, which could alleviate Miami’s concerns.

Herbert is not without his flaws

Herbert does not come without potential problems. Pro Football Focus has noted that the Oregon product tends to "panic in a collapsing pocket." He’s also known as a quiet type, which has caused many to question his leadership ability.

If presented with the choice between Tagovailoa and Herbert, it would seem that the former would be the decision for the Fins. Both ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have Tagovailoa as the second-best quarterback in the draft behind Burrow. That would mean Herbert would fall into the laps of the Los Angeles Chargers (+200), who recently moved on from longtime signal caller Philip Rivers.

Herbert could be a good fit with the Chargers

The current No. 1 quarterback on the Chargers roster is journeyman Tyrod Taylor, who had largely unsuccessful stints as the starter in Buffalo and Cleveland. It would be very surprising if L.A. doesn’t draft a QB at No. 6, and Herbert fits the bill as the third-rated passer in this draft class.
