Packers' Super Bowl odds take a hit following lopsided loss to Saints

The first week of the 2021 NFL season has come and gone. It’s early, but that hasn’t stopped bettors from provoking several shifts in Super Bowl odds based on what we saw in each team’s first 60 minutes of play.

Packers looked abysmal against Saints

One of the biggest stories in Week 1 was the egg laid by the Green Bay Packers. While it’s true that the New Orleans Saints probably played with a bit extra firepower given the hurricane that displaced the squad ahead of the lid-lifter, the Packers showed very little fight on Sunday afternoon. The Saints romped 38-3, with new starting quarterback Jameis Winston firing five touchdown passes. Things got so bad for Green Bay that future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers was benched in the fourth quarter of a game deemed a lost cause.

One game does not a season make, and the Packers have shown themselves to be a second-half team during most of Rodgers’ reign as the starting quarterback. However, Green Bay’s Super Bowl odds were not unaffected by this result. Available at +1000 prior to the game, the Packers now sit at +1400.

Tampa Bay and Kansas City remain atop oddsboard following Week 1 victories

Every team is chasing the two squads that contested the big game a season ago. Kansas City (+475) and Tampa Bay (+600) remain the top two betting choices by a considerable margin, with the LA Rams and San Francisco 49ers sitting as the co-third choices at +1300.

Green Bay could start the season 1-3

The Packers may very well get back on the beam in Week 2. They face the Detroit Lions at home in a game they should win. However, this doesn’t mean you should rush to take their +1400 odds right now. After their next contest, the Packers get San Francisco and Pittsburgh in succession, which means a 1-3 start is not unlikely. If you like Green Bay to win it all, you may want to wait until early-October as such a slow start may give you a bit more bang for your buck.
