Scully's NFL notebook: Justin Tucker's record-setting boot

Watch out for the Buffalo offense!

Against a pair of respected defenses (Miami and Washington), the Bills have scored a combined 78 points the last two weeks, and Buffalo has a big game looming at Kansas City on Oct. 10.

Let’s examine some more storylines in this week’s NFL notebook.

Tucker gives Detroit the boot

The Baltimore Ravens reached the Detroit 48-yard line with seconds remaining, and Justin Tucker lifted them to victory with a record 66-yard field goal. To make it even more remarkable, the kick bounced off the crossbar and through the uprights.

Other record-setting performances in Week 3 included Jacksonville’s Jamal Agnew, who became only the third player to score a 109-yard touchdown, when he returned a missed field goal attempt, and Cincinnati’s 21-year-old Ja’Marr Chase, who eclipsed Hall of Famer Randy Moss as the youngest receiver to have four receiving touchdowns in his team’s first three games.

The dynamic Rams

One of five unbeaten teams, the Los Angeles Rams established themselves as the NFC frontrunner with a convincing win over Tampa Bay.

After their first two possessions ended with a punt, quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 26 of his 32 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns.

Stafford is a perfect fit for coach Sean McVay’s offense and tied Hall of Famer Kurt Warner’s franchise record, with nine touchdown passes in his first three games.

The Rams also added DeShean Jackson to stretch the field, and Cooper Kupp appears set for the best season of his career.

Kansas City woes

Teams that lose the Super Bowl teams often suffer a hangover. Seventeen of the last 20 have failed to win a playoff game the following season. The Kansas City Chiefs can still turn things around, but troubling issues have surfaced during a 1-2 start.

Kansas City turned it over on five consecutive possessions recently, while the Chiefs rank 30th in total defense and are tied for 31st in scoring defense.

The Chiefs don’t put away opponents like they once did and have failed to cover nine of their last 10 regular-season games.

Rookie quarterbacks struggle

Starting rookie quarterbacks are off to a miserable 1-9 record this season.

Mac Jones owns the lone win, but he didn’t play well in New England’s 28-13 home loss to New Orleans in Week 3 and tossed three interceptions.

Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, the top two picks in the 2021 Draft, each have seven interceptions.

NFL game of the week

Week 4 matchups include Arizona at the Rams, Seattle at San Francisco, and Las Vegas at Los Angeles Chargers, but Tom Brady’s return to New England is the game of the week.

The atmosphere promises to be electric for the first meeting between Bill Belichick and Brady.
